Choose your alphabet range and spin

Letters on wheel:26

Random letter generator — the whole alphabet on one wheel

Spin the wheel and pick a random letter from A to Z. Use it for word games, classroom phonics, Scattergories-style rounds, raffles keyed to initials, or any moment that needs a fair letter draw. Every letter gets an equal slice — Z has exactly the same chance as E.

The wheel loads with all 26 letters already on it, so the first spin works the instant the page opens. Narrow the field to vowels only or consonants only, set a custom range, and switch between UPPERCASE and lowercase to match your game. For number draws instead of letters, the random number generator covers any range, and the 1–10 wheel is the quickest small-range pick.

How to generate a random letter in three steps

  1. Choose your range. Full alphabet, vowels only, consonants only, or a custom range like A–M — and pick upper or lower case.
  2. Press Spin. The wheel slows and settles on one letter. Every letter on the wheel owns an identical slice, so the odds are exactly even.
  3. Use the letter. Start the word round, call the initial, or spin again. Turn on remove-after-spin and each drawn letter leaves the wheel, so no letter repeats until you reset.

What people actually use a letter wheel for

The classic use is word games: spin a letter and everyone races to name a word — or a word in a category — starting with it. In the classroom it's a phonics tool: spin a letter and the group practices its sound, or names things that begin with it. The vowels-only mode is handy for spelling warm-ups, and the custom range lets a teacher limit the draw to the letters the class has covered so far.

Beyond games, a letter draw settles small arguments fairly: whose turn it is by first initial, which category comes first, which shelf of the raffle book to start from. When the draw needs names rather than letters, the wheel of names picks a person from your list, and the random name generator invents one from scratch.

  • Full alphabet, vowels only, consonants only, or a custom range.
  • UPPERCASE or lowercase output to match your game.
  • Remove-after-spin for no-repeat rounds through the alphabet.
  • Export results as PDF, CSV or text for records.

Is the letter draw really random?

Yes. The winning letter is drawn from your browser's cryptographic random source the moment you press Spin, and the animation is then rendered to land on that result — the wheel is never steered toward a slice mid-spin. Each letter on the wheel owns an identical slice, so every letter has an exactly equal chance on every spin, and no spin is influenced by the one before it.

That matters more than it sounds: people asked to "pick a random letter" lean heavily toward a handful of favourites, so a human draw isn't a fair one. The wheel has no favourites. The draw happens entirely on your device — nothing is sent to a server, so nobody can tamper with the result from anywhere else. For a two-way version of the same fairness argument, the yes or no wheel and the coin flip settle binary calls the same visible way.
